Historic Sites for History Nerds
What’s Texas without some history, right?
At La Porte, you will find plenty of historic sites that take you back to some of the country’s most important battles. Here are just a few that you can check out in this part of town.
Juan Seguin Historic Park
Travel through time as you walk along the small, yet fascinating park area of the Juan Seguin Historic Park. This understated memorial is a must-see if you are keen to learn more about the Revolution of Texas. The park leads right to the San Jacinto Monument, and this wide-open space is perfect for a picnic or for soaking in the sun and relaxing.
Battleship Texas Historic Site
This famed ship endured turbulent moments in history, being a key player in the World Wars. Visitors can join guided tours to learn more about the Battleship Texas’ role in history, or you can freely explore this massive ship. After a stroll along the grounds, you can head outside of this ship to enjoy a fine BBQ with your family on the lawn.
Sylvan Beach Depot Museum and Library
The La Porte Bay Heritage Society manages the museum and library at Sylvan Beach, which is an excellent place to get to know more about the town’s humble beginnings. It tells the interesting story of how the town evolved throughout time. With just a few buildings set in barren soil, it has become a modernized city that it is today. Be sure to call in for an appointment if you wish to visit the library and museum during the week as it is only open for visitors on weekends.
Shopping
What’s a vacation without some souvenir shopping to bring back home?
La Porte has plenty to offer in the shopping department. You can find dozens of eclectic shops, fashion boutiques, antique stores, art galleries, and jewelers to satisfy your hunger for shopping.
If you happen to be there on the first Saturday of the month, we highly recommend that you swing by downtown La Porte for the Main Street Trade Days. It is where you can discover quirky new finds such as repurposed furniture, trinkets and collectibles, antiques, and so much more. This once-a-month event is only from 10 AM to 2 PM, so be sure not to miss it!
Seafood at the Waterfront
There’s no better way to enjoy the freshest and finest seafood than at the waterfront. The Monument Inn Restaurant is one of the best restaurants in La Porte, and it’s been consistent with its high ratings from customers. Their extensive menu ranges from local and freshly-caught produce such as their Stuffed Flounder and Gulf Coast Oyster and even something quite exotic as the fried to perfection alligator.
Sylvan Beach Park
Sun-worshippers unite!
Pack your swimsuit and sunscreen and get your Vitamin Sea at the beach, a spacious 32-acre beach park that boasts of its pristine and uncrowded white sands, boat ramp, skate park, fishing pier, and a bait shop. While the wife sunbathes and the kids play on the sand, fishing enthusiasts can spend some time working on their angling skills at the pier.
